Fail or Holy Grail Review: Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum

Hello Princesses!
Today I'm going to be talking about the Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum in the Original formula! I first tried this back in November and wrote a First Impression review on it at that point in time. I really liked the way it worked with my skin so I purchased the full size, and now that I'm almost out of the full size, I'm here to talk about my Holy Grail product!

"Black Sugar Perfect First Serum & Cotton Pad
Skin-Brightening and Anti-Wrinkle Effects. A first serum that provides exfoliating, brightening, wrinkle-smoothing and hydrating benefits in a single formula. Use daily for soft, smooth skin. Cotton Pad : "Wipe and Pat Skin" How to Use Black Sugar Perfect First Serum.
How to use:
Black Sugar Perfect First Serum : Immediately after cleansing, pour a generous amount onto a cotton pad and wipe over the face. Emollients may settle at the bottom of the bottle, but that does not affect the product’s effects. Just shake well before use. Cotton Pad : Use immediately after cleansing. Pour onto a cotton pad. Using the cleaning side of the pad, gently wipe skin to remove dead skin cells and impurities. Using the absorbent side of the pad, gently "pat" the skin to absorb the serum remaining on the pad."(1

The outer packaging of this Serum is pretty nondescript, and it also comes with a set of cotton pads which is really cool! I don't use the cotton pads to apply the Serum because I prefer to use my hands to save wasting resources, though they are quite nice anyway.

This Serum comes packaged in a gorgeous, heavy glass bottle that kinda reminds me of old apothecary jars. I love the packaging, but I'm also terrified to travel with it since it is likely to break (and is really heavy!). It has a plastic tip applicator which lets out just enough product for one application, though sometimes I tip it twice if I want a super boost!

This serum does have one weird little quirk, which is that it gets very sticky and goopy around the lid every so often. It's weird, but it's not awful.

The Serum is slightly yellow in colour, and smells like sweet sugar. I pat one drop all over my face and it absorbs within a couple of seconds. I don't find that it leaves any residue, and once it's absorbed I'm ready to do the next step of my skincare. I really like how quickly it absorbs because I have no excuse not  to use this step even if I'm having a late night because it's so quick!

I definitely see a noticeable brightening of my skin with continued use of this product. I find that it also hydrates my skin really nicely and compliments my other skincare because it's so easy to layer. The first time I used this Serum in the sample sachet I noticed such a huge difference in my skin brightness and bounciness that I was immediately hooked. Now that I'm using this Serum twice a day I don't notice the glow so much because it has become my standard, but I definitely notice my skin gets duller and less bouncy when I don't use it (like if I travel!).
I can see some very subtle differences between the before and after photos, there is a slight glow to my skin, but I really love that you can't see any residue on my skin. I adore products that hydrate my skin without making it greasy, and this is a great layering product!

What I Love
- Smells super sweet
- Sturdy, cute packaging
- Hydrates, and brightens my skin
- Super quick to absorb
- Gives my skin a subtle glow
- Doesn't leave my skin feeling oily

What I Don't Love
- I'm worried the glass will break while travelling!

Final Thoughts
I adore this product! I find that it brightens my skin and hydrates it really well, I haven't seen any ageing of my skin for the past 4 months that I've been using it so I can only assume that it's working well! Even though this is my Holy Grail Product, Skinfood also have the same product but 2x the strength, so I'm definitely going to try that next!

I would definitely recommend this to any Princesses looking for a lightweight Serum that hydrates and brightens the skin beautifully! :3

I have had some queries as to why I can find a Holy Grail item every month. Most people base their HG products on something that they cannot bear to replace and will repurchase till the end of time. However as a beauty blogger I am always looking to try new things, otherwise there will be nothing to write about. My HG criteria is a product that I adore to use and can't really find anything bad to write about it. I may eventually replace it (like in this case I'll be trying the same Serum, but the newer version) but that doesn't mean that it's not a really good product for me. I hope this helps clear things up a little! ^ ^

    1. Thank you so much! ^ ^ I find it funny that most of the HG are skincare products, I seem to be much tougher on make up products! ><

    1. I actually don't think they make it any more! I would go for the 2x essential one though, the ingredients list looks similar!
