Review: TheBalm BalmShelter Tinted Moisturiser in Lighter than Light

Hello Princesses!

Today I'm going to be talking about TheBalm BalmShelter Tinted Moisturiser in Lighter than Light! This Tinted Moisturiser claims to provide a polished complexion and everyday sun protection.

"This weightless, silky-smooth tinted moisturizer with SPF 18 offers sun protection for everyday drama while helping to improve the look of your skin’s tone and texture, leaving you with a polished complexion.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: OCTINOXATE (7.5%), OCTISALATE (3.0%) ,AVOBENZONE (3.0%)

INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: WATER (AQUA), CETEARYL ALCOHOL,ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE, CETYL DIMETHICONE, DIMETHICONE,HEXYL LAURATE, POTASSIUM CETYL PHOSPHATE, HYDROXYETHYL ACRYLATE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE COPOLYMER/ISOHEXADECANE/POLYSORBATE 60, STYRENE/DVB CROSSPOLYMER, SORBITAN SESQUIOLEATE,  PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, HEXYLENE GLYCOL, SODIUM DEHYDROACETATE, MAY CONTAIN: TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)"(1)

The packaging is quite cute, but can we address some of the extra claims on the back of the packaging. This should not be used as your only sun protection if you are going outside of your house. The SPF is fairly low at SPF18 and I can guarantee that you won't apply enough of this Tinted Moisturiser to give your skin sufficient sun protection. Use a regular sunscreen, this will not do the same job.
The cap does get really gross every time this product is used which is a little nasty. You can see the darker patches in the lid which are little oxidised chunks of moisturiser, ew.
I have the shade Lighter than Light which is an extremely pale neutral tone. This is great because it means Porcelain Princesses that have warm toned or cool toned skin can use this too. Since it is a sheerer formula, it lets your natural undertones shine come through so it looks like it matches well.
You can see that this tinted moisturiser looks slightly pinker on my skin, but this is because my skin is very warm toned. It has very light coverage and doesn't exaggerate my pores or flaws, but doesn't hide them either. I did find that this does not sit well with thicker moisturisers, it has the tendency to pill and roll around the skin which is frustrating because it takes much longer to blend in and I end up with sheerer coverage. Check out the video to see what I mean by this!
This Tinted Moisturiser does need to be set with a powder for me, otherwise it transfers really badly. This also gives me a little extra coverage too which is always welcome!
The longevity and oil control of this product are quite average, though I don't really expect all that much for a Tinted Moisturiser really. For 6 hours the wear time is fine, it's a little oily throughout the T-Zone but the coverage is holding up well.
However, any longer without blotting and powdering will turn my face into a fry pan. The amount of oil on my face after 10 hours is gross, but the reality is that I would work 9 hours in a day, if you count the 30min commute each way that means I need my make up to look good for 10 hours. This does not do that. But, it is perfect for running errands, or going shopping for a couple of hours.
What I Love
- Easy to apply with brushes, sponges or fingers
- Great neutral colour
- Gives me beautifully natural looking skin
- Lasts well up to 6 hours
- Large colour range

What I Don't Love
- Packaging gets quite messy
- Does not work well with thicker moisturisers
Average oil control and lasting power
Final Thoughts
As a tinted moisturiser, this is a pretty good product! As a sunscreen or long lasting make up product, it isn't so good. It is a pet hate of mine when products claim to be all you need for sun protection, considering the amount you need to apply of your regular sunscreen there is no way you would be applying nearly as much if you are using a tinted product. Be sun smart and use a dedicated facial sunscreen and keep your skin safe! Other than that, this Tinted Moisturiser gives my skin a lovely natural finish, it's easy and quick to apply and lasts well up to 6 hours with a massive shade range.

I would recommend TheBalm BalmShelter Tinted Moisturiser for any Princesses looking for a natural tinted moisturiser, and the shade Lighter than Light for any Porcelain Princesses that have NC10/NW10 skin tone! ^ ^

  1. It looks like a great tinted moisturizer if you're just going around time running errands and don't want to wear anything heavy. Since it has average oil control, I'm not sure it would be great for me to try it out since my oil production is outrageous. Thanks for sharing your review <3

    1. Haha potentially not great for very oily skin, but for only a couple of hours it would be fine ^ ^
